American (1951 – )

In another life Roy Tamboli would be an astrophysicist or a mystic. In this life, however, he generates a stream of high voltage paintings exploring chaos, order and the complexity of contemporary life. Using materials and techniques developed as a sculptor, Tamboli captures the reality of multilevel states of being. A descendent of Italian immigrants who settled in the Mississippi Delta, he engaged with spirituality and mysticism at a young age by way of the Catholic Church and the African American gospel culture surrounding him in Memphis, Tennessee. Tamboli studied fine arts at the University of Memphis and has exhibited large-scale bronze and steel sculptures, print works, paintings, and other media on a global scale. Collectors of note include: Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis, TN, Christian Brothers University, Memphis, TN, and Mississippi Museum of Art, Oxford, MS
