Chairs are a frequent presence in Rebecca Thompson’s oil paintings, such as the striking still life Blue Chair With Table ($1,600). “Twice Told Tales,” her show at Greg Thompson Fine Art, has several chair pieces that invite closer examination. In Conversations (sold), a half dozen empty chairs face an inlet. Will the conversation begin when they are occupied or are they echoes of past conversations? It’s not hard to see touches of Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec in pieces such as Museum Lecture (sold), where skillful feathering obscures details of a man and woman. The lush and luminous Old River ($2,400) is a landscape with two boats and, almost off the canvas, a chair with a can of soda on the ground. In the melancholy Abandoned ($750), a run-down house surrounded by a fence with a “keep out” sign seems a powerful metaphor on neglect or a societal/psychological metaphor. “Twice Told Tales” by Rebecca Thompson, Greg Thompson Fine Art, 429 Main Street, North Little Rock.
